From Attic to Catacombs – St. Michael’s Treasures Deutsche Version dieser Tour
Dating back to the 13th century, St. Michael’s is one of Vienna’s oldest churches, even though its elegant Neoclassical façade, added in 1792, may suggest otherwise. This fascinating tour takes you on a journey through 800 years of history, from the attic to the crypt.

Ascend to the unique roof structure, an area usually closed to the public, before stepping inside the church, which has preserved much of its early Gothic character. Marvel at the original Baroque organ on which Mozart’s Requiem was performed for the first time, and admire the dramatic Rococo stucco relief of The Fall of the Angels towering above the main altar. The side chapels, with their intricately wrought iron gates and rich decoration, are equally worth exploring.

Finally, descend into the catacombs, virtually untouched since their closure in 1784. Over some 4,000 people found their final resting place here, among them the renowned court poet Pietro Metastasio, whose libretto La clemenza di Tito was set to music by Mozart. The painted Baroque coffins and mummified bodies dressed in frock coats and wigs offer a hauntingly vivid glimpse into Vienna’s distant past.
