Befitting an Emperor – The Hofburg Palace, a City within the City Deutsche Version dieser Tour
For centuries, the Hofburg Palace—winter residence and administrative heart of the Habsburg dynasty—served as a centre of immense imperial power. This vast complex, composed of buildings from many eras and in many styles, is second in size only to Vatican City. Originally a medieval moated fortress, it was expanded continuously; the Neue Burg wing on Heldenplatz was not completed until after the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Today, the Hofburg is home to the offices of Austria’s President and to a state-of-the-art conference centre admired around the world, as well as numerous museums and imperial collections. The grand arena of the Spanish Riding School forms part of the ensemble, as does the magnificent Imperial Library. The Baroque Reichskanzleitrakt (State Chancellery Wing) contains the Imperial Apartments, which are open to visitors.
Our walk leads us around the Hofburg and into the Burggarten, once the private park of the imperial family, featuring the elegant glass Palm House built in the Art Nouveau style around 1900. We also pass by the Albertina, today one of the great repositories of world art. Learn about the history and architecture of the Hofburg, the rulers and personalities who lived and worked here, and—last but not least—its starring role as a film location.
Meeting Point 1., Michaelerplatz 5, in front of St. Michael's Church
