| Military Genius, Charming Lover - Napoleon in Vienna
|
|
| Napoleon’s sweeping reforms and relentless military campaigns reshaped the map of Europe. For the Austrian Empire, he was a formidable and feared adversary. He came to Vienna twice: in 1805 to negotiate a peace treaty, and again in 1809, when he captured the city—though only after two fierce battles. The people of Vienna suffered greatly under the strains of war but were nonetheless captivated by the magnetic presence of the French leader, flocking to watch his military parades with a mix of awe and curiosity. Even the Emperor’s daughter, Marie Louise, was ultimately drawn into his orbit, entering a marriage arranged solely for political and dynastic advantage, yet becoming one of Napoleon’s closest companions. On this walk, we explore the places in Vienna’s historic centre that are closely linked to Napoleon’s visits. We introduce you to the personalities connected with him, evoke the atmosphere that hung over the city at the dawn of the 19th century, and shed light on the profound impact Napoleon’s presence left on Vienna. |
