| City of the Dead – Vienna’s Central Cemetery
|
|
| What Père Lachaise is to Parisians and Highgate is to Londoners, the Zentralfriedhof is to the Viennese. Calling it a “City of the Dead” is no exaggeration. Spanning more than six hundred acres, it is one of the largest cemeteries in the world—larger even than Vienna’s entire historic first district. Opened in 1875, it reads like a “Who’s Who” of Vienna, from Beethoven to Falco of Rock Me Amadeus fame. On this tour, we guide you to the honorary graves (Ehrengräber) of Austria’s most celebrated composers: Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms rest side by side, in the company of most of the Strauss family. Just a few steps away lies the honorary grave of Arnold Schönberg, marked by a striking cube-like monument crafted by Austrian sculptor Fritz Wotruba. You will see the grand mausoleums of mayors and industrial magnates, as well as the comparatively modest Präsidentengruft—the final resting place of the presidents of Austria’s Second Republic. Among the internationally renowned figures buried here are Hollywood icon and inventor Hedy Lamarr, jazz legend Joe Zawinul, writer Franz Werfel, conductor Willy Boskovsky and entertainer Udo Jürgens. Several sections are dedicated to victims of war and political persecution. We also visit the impressive Church of St. Charles Borromeo, the architectural centrepiece of the Zentralfriedhof and a masterpiece of Vienna’s Secessionist style. |
