Roman Vienna – Vienna’s Beginnings Deutsche Version dieser Tour
The beginnings of Vienna go back some 2000 years. As the northernmost boundary of the Roman empire needed to be protected against the onslaught of Germanic tribes, a military camp was set up, Vindobona. It was situated in what today is the historic city centre, and the course of its wall is still reflected in a series of striking streets. We retrace the story of the rise and eventual decline of Vindobona, and explore the surviving remains of the second most important Roman settlement on Austrian soil. We also take a look at what life was like for a legionary stationed at the edge of the Roman empire.
