Jewish Vienna

Jews have lived in Vienna on and off for more than a thousand years. Before the 'Anschluss' of 1938, Vienna had one of the largest Jewish communities in Europe. Their contribution to the cultural, scientific, economic and social life in Vienna was without precedence. Emigration and the Holocaust left a void that will never be filled again. Small as it may be today, Vienna's Jewish community is enjoying something of a renaissance, much of it centred once again in Leopoldstadt.
